Navi Mumbai: Amid rising political tensions over the proposed removal of the Ichhapurti Ganesh Temple in Sector 15, Airoli, local residents and Shiv Sena leaders have launched a large-scale signature campaign to oppose the move and safeguard the temple.

The temple, which is reportedly situated on mangrove land, faces possible demolition following recent orders issued by Forest Minister Ganesh Naik to clear encroachments along the Airoli creek.

In response, Shiv Sena’s Navi Mumbai Deputy Leader Vijay Chougule has taken the lead in mobilizing public sentiment to protect the temple.

Speaking at a recent press conference, Chougule alleged that efforts to remove the temple are politically motivated. “There is a conspiracy underway, and the temple is being unfairly targeted under the pretext of forest protection. We will not remain silent,” he said, calling on citizens to support the campaign.

The signature drive, being conducted at the temple premises, has already drawn participation from hundreds of devotees and local residents. Volunteers are stationed at the site, encouraging visitors to sign petitions addressed to the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister, urging them to intervene and halt any demolition action.

Chougule stated that the campaign is only the beginning of a larger movement to protect religious and cultural sites from what he termed “selective administrative action.” He warned that if needed, his party would take to the streets in protest.

As the petition gains momentum, all eyes are now on how the administration and political leadership will respond to growing public pressure.
