The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has launched a green initiative to convert garden waste into high-quality organic compost through the development of compost pits across city parks.

The campaign is intended to boost the local greenery and strengthen the goals of the Majhi Vasundhara Abhiyan.

There are a total of 120 compost pits installed in various gardens across the city. "These pits serve as composting hubs where dry leaves, grass clippings, and other organic matter are scientifically decomposed to produce nutrient-rich manure. This eco-friendly compost is being used for trees, shrubs, and lawns, reducing dependency on chemical fertilizers," informed an officer from garden department.

The composting process is straightforward and cost-effective. Rectangular or square pits are created using bricks, starting with a layer of soil, followed by bacterial culture. A mix of wet and dry green waste is then added, moistened, and regularly stirred using specialized tools. With careful management, compost is ready within 45 days—free of foul odor and rich in nutrients.

Commissioner Dr. Shinde emphasized the environmental and economic benefits of the program: “This initiative not only ensures efficient garden waste management but also reduces the cost of waste disposal and chemical fertilizer usage, while promoting natural farming practices and enhancing soil health.” he said.

The compost is also being promoted for use in potted plants, rooftop gardens, and vegetable cultivation at the household level. Citizens are encouraged to separate wet and dry waste and avoid mixing non-degradable materials like plastic with organic waste.

"Through this initiative, the NMMC aims to foster greater citizen participation in environmental protection. The corporation is now urging every household to adopt composting by creating their own ‘Green Basket’ at home," adds the official.
