Navi Mumbai: To ensure that roads remain open for traffic and footpaths are accessible to pedestrians, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has initiated a strict campaign against abandoned vehicles and unauthorized vendors.

The move comes in response to the increasing number of vehicles left unattended on roads and the rising presence of illegal vendors encroaching on footpaths.

Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde has been conducting regular reviews of the city's urban management. During these meetings, the challenges posed by abandoned vehicles and unauthorized hawkers have been a key focus. According to the civic body, such encroachments not only disrupt traffic and pedestrian movement but also contribute to cleanliness issues in the city.

Taking decisive action, Commissioner Shinde has directed all Assistant Commissioners and divisional officers to issue notice letters under Sections 230 and 231 of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporations Act, 1949. Vehicle owners will be given an opportunity to voluntarily remove their vehicles, with awareness campaigns conducted via loudspeaker announcements.

“Once the notice period expires, we will seize the abandoned vehicles and transport them to the designated dumping yard using towing services. Further action will be taken as per municipal regulations,” a NMMC officer said.

In addition to clearing abandoned vehicles, the NMMC has also intensified efforts to remove unauthorized vendors occupying roads and footpaths. The civic body has made it clear that strict measures will be enforced against those obstructing public spaces.

Navi Mumbai, known for its well-planned infrastructure, aims to maintain its reputation as a modern and organized city. Commissioner Shinde has appealed to citizens to cooperate with the initiative, emphasizing that the campaign is crucial for maintaining smooth urban mobility and ensuring the rightful use of public spaces.
