Navi Mumbai: Following the collapse of a portion of a dilapidated building on Friday, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) carried out a full demolition of the remaining structure located on Plot No. 59 of Sector-26, on Parsik Hill at CBD Belapur on Saturday.

Officials from the Belapur Ward Office visited the site immediately after the incident on Friday and confirmed structural damage to the unoccupied building. In the interest of public safety and to avoid potential harm, the structure was promptly brought down the next day.

"We contacted the owner of the building who is settled out of country. His representative met us and we informed that we would be demolishing the rest of the structure and they will have to pay the fine," Assistant Municipal Commissioner and Belapur Ward Officer Dr. Amol Palve.

The demolition was conducted under the direction of Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde and supervision of Deputy Commissioner of the Encroachment Department Dr. Kailas Gaikwad. The operation was overseen on site by Dr Palve, along with Deputy Engineer Pandharinath Chaudhe, and Junior Engineers Abhay Gavit, Dhiren Bhoir, and Nayan Bhoir.

The action was executed with the help of two JCBs, one Pokland machine, and a team of ten labourers. Staff from the ward office and security personnel from the Encroachment Department also supported the operation.

The building had been declared unsafe and classified under the C-2B category during 2020–2021. "Notices issued on August 16, 2024, and May 22, had already alerted the concerned parties to conduct a structural audit. However, no action had been taken, and the collapse prompted immediate intervention by the civic body," Dr Palve added. In the collapse, two parked cars were damaged and nobody was injured.
