In a commendable effort to support inmate education and rehabilitation, the Marathi Sahitya Sanskruti Kala Mandal (Marathi Literature, Culture, and Arts Council), based in Vashi, donated 400 books to Taloja Central Jail. The initiative was carried out through the Prof. Manikrao Kirtane Library, which contributed 300 books, while an additional 100 books were provided by the Town Library.

“We had a large collection of books and wanted to ensure they were put to meaningful use. Five years ago, we had undertaken a similar initiative with Taloja Jail, where there is a functioning library used by inmates. So, we decided to contribute once again,” said Subhash Kulkarni, President of the Kirtane Library.

The books include a diverse selection of Marathi literature, novels by notable authors, works on psychology, and some English titles, all chosen to encourage constructive engagement and learning among inmates.

The books were formally handed over by Vice President Ravindra Nene, Prof. Ashwini Bachalkar, and Thane District Library Officer Prashant Patil to Teacher Tagad and Senior Jail Officer Rahul Zhutale. Approximately 200 inmates were present during the handover event.

The initiative reflects the Council’s ongoing commitment to social upliftment through the power of literature and education.
