Navi Mumbai: Following the death of 32-year-old Sangita Kharat just two hours after childbirth, the woman’s family has alleged gross negligence on the part of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) hospital.
According to family members, Kharat began experiencing excessive bleeding shortly after delivery. “Despite clear signs of hemorrhage, hospital staff reportedly failed to act swiftly. When attempts were made to draw blood for testing, it was discovered that there was barely any blood left in her body — indicating a severe loss that had gone unnoticed or unaddressed for too long,” her brother Sanket Kamble said.
Kharat, who was resident of Turbhe before marriage, was currently residing in Kalyan and was currently under treatment of Turbhe hospital. On Friday, when she had gone for check-up, the hospital authorities told that she would have to get admitted to Vashi NMMC hospital for delivery.
“At 6pm she was taken to the hospital and at 8.30pm, she delivered a baby girl. She was then given stitches after her normal delivery and we suspect that while giving the stitches, something went wrong which caused bleeding,” the brother added.
The family alleged, that the doctors came to know of her condition when they tried to take blood for testing but there was no blood and she was rushed to emergency when she suffered cardiac arrest. “She was then referred to Fostis Hospital and she was to undergo a surgery on Saturday but she passed away,” Kamble said.
Following the death, the alleging negligence from doctors in Vashi NMMC hospital, they gave a letter to Vashi police station. “We are awaiting the Post Mortem report and expert opinion to ascertain if there was any negligence,” a police officer from Vashi police station said.
Meanwhile, Superintendent of Vashi NMMC Hospital, Dr Rajesh Mhatre said, “I suspect it to be a case of Amniotic fluid embolism (AFE). It is a condition which is unpredictable and if one goes into that condition, mortality is most likely to happen. It is a very rare condition and unfortunately this patient is suspected to have faced that. Our doctors were there throughout with the patient and hence this is not a case of negligence. Post mortem report might not be able to ascertain this condition but chances are that if histopathology is done, it could be ascertained.”
Kharat worked in an office in Sanpada run by herself and her brother that took up RTO related works. Meanwhile, her husband worked with a private firm in fire safety. Kharat couple would have celebrated their first wedding anniversary on Monday if she was to be alive.
