Navi Mumbai: The Aerodrome Environment Management Committee (AEMC), established by the Maharashtra government for the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), held its inaugural meeting on February 13. The committee was formed through a government resolution (GR) issued on January 6, 2025, to address environmental concerns that could impact airport operations.

When asked about what transpired in the meeting, a senior official from City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) didn't elaborate much and said, "It was the first meeting and a routine one."

With the rapid urbanization of metropolitan cities across India, air traffic has surged, leading to increasing risks of bird and wildlife strikes near airports. Unauthorized settlements, slaughterhouses, and improper waste disposal contribute to the presence of birds and animals in airport vicinities, posing significant threats to aircraft safety. Recognizing these challenges, the Ministry of Home Affairs had mandated the establishment of AEMCs through a directive issued on May 7, 1980.

The NMIA, being developed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model by Navi Mumbai International Airport Limited (NMIAL), is expected to commence operations in March 2025. With the first two phases nearing completion, operational trials are scheduled to begin on December 30, 2024.

The AEMC has been constituted with key officials and stakeholders responsible for ensuring effective environmental management around the airport. The committee is chaired by the Managing Director of the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) and includes representatives from the Divisional Commissioner, Konkan Division; tgr Police Commissioner, Navi Mumbai; Commissioners of Navi Mumbai and Panvel Municipal Corporations; Maharashtra State Animal Husbandry, Fisheries, and Pollution Control Board; Maharashtra Maritime Board and Directorate General of Civil Aviation; district and police officials from Raigad besides airline and aviation security representatives.

The committee will focus on implementing regulations under the Aircraft Act, 1934, and Aircraft Rules, 1937, to mitigate environmental hazards within a 10-km radius of the airport. Measures include monitoring waste disposal, restricting slaughterhouse operations, and enforcing pollution control guidelines. Additionally, the AEMC will adhere to the Civil Aviation Requirements (CAR) 2017 and advisories from the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to enhance safety protocols.

Regular monthly meetings will be conducted to evaluate and implement necessary environmental measures, with provisions to involve additional experts as required. The formation of the AEMC marks a crucial step in ensuring the safe and sustainable operation of NMIA, aligning with both national and international aviation safety standards.
