Navi Mumbai: Juinagar buzzed with festive excitement this Narali Purnima as the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) Juinagar–Nerul Division hosted the second edition of the Kheli Naral Phodi competition, a traditional sport deeply rooted in the coastal culture of Maharashtra.
Traditional Konkan Sport Revived in Urban Setting
Originating in the Konkan region, particularly in Sindhudurg, Kheli Naral Phodi is a test of raw strength, skill, and technique.
Participants are challenged to crack coconuts with their bare hands a task that requires not just muscle power but also precision in striking the coconut at its weakest points.
"The game has long been a feature of rural fairs and temple festivals, symbolizing perseverance and competitive spirit. We wanted to revive this game in the city ," said a party worker.
Over 50 Participants Compete for Top Honours
This year, over 50 residents stepped into the challenge arena, some using swift, clean strikes while others relied on strategic positioning of the coconut against the ground or knee before delivering the final blow.
“This is a very interesting game played in the interior of Maharashtra. Contestants are requested to crack the coconut and those breaking the most are awarded,” said party representative Sachin Kadam.
Festivities Enhanced by Govinda Pathaks and Cultural Performances
The festive atmosphere was amplified by Govinda Pathaks, who formed dazzling human pyramids, adding to the celebratory mood of Narali Purnima a festival marking the onset of the fishing season and offering coconuts to the sea for safe voyages.
