Nagpur: Nagpur remains tense as curfew continues in four police station limits for the seventh consecutive day, on Sunday, March 23, following violent clashes on March 17. The unrest erupted over the demand for the removal of Aurangzeb’s grave, when a religious scripture was allegedly set on fire by protesters.
Rumours spread that a verse from the Quran was inscribed on it, leading to mass protests, stone-pelting and arson. In response, the administration imposed curfew-like restrictions in several parts of the city to restore order.
Curfew Status & Restrictions
Currently, restrictions remain in place in the areas under the jurisdiction of Ganeshpeth, Tehsil, Kotwali and Yashodhara Nagar police stations, reported ABP Majha. However, the administration has provided some relief by allowing movement between 7 pm and 10 pm. Outside these hours, strict curfew measures remain in effect. Meanwhile, curfew has been lifted entirely in the jurisdictions of five police stations, Pachpaoli, Shantinagar, Lakadganj, Sakkardara and Imamwada, where normalcy has been restored.
In curfew-affected zones, all markets, government offices and private establishments remain shut as per the directives issued by the Nagpur Police Commissioner.
CM Fadnavis Threatens Bulldozer Action Against Rioters
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has ordered stringent action against those involved in the violence. Addressing a press conference, he announced that damages caused during the riots would be recovered from the rioters themselves. “If they do not pay, their properties will be seized and auctioned. Wherever necessary, bulldozers will also be used,” Fadnavis stated.
As part of the crackdown, the police have arrested 104 individuals based on CCTV footage and other evidence. Authorities are continuing efforts to track down more suspects. Additionally, the police are actively monitoring social media platforms to identify and prosecute those spreading misinformation. So far, 68 misleading posts have been removed, and their creators may face legal action as co-accused in the case.
As tensions subside, authorities are gradually easing restrictions where feasible. However, with ongoing arrests and investigations, law enforcement remains on high alert to prevent any further flare-ups. Officials urge residents to avoid spreading rumours and cooperate with the authorities to ensure peace returns to the city.
