Mumbai: In a major urban renewal effort, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) rolled out an ambitious three-phase upgradation and beautification plan for the area surrounding the revered Siddhivinayak Temple in Prabhadevi. Aimed at improving the infrastructure and easing the experience for the temple's countless daily visitors, the project will be jointly managed by BMC’s G North and G South wards, covering key neighbourhoods like Dadar, Mahim, Dharavi, Worli and parts of Lower Parel.

A senior BMC official confirmed that the first phase alone will cost over Rs 100 crore. “This initiative will enhance movement, safety, and aesthetics for devotees without making any structural changes to the sanctum or internal temple premises,” the official said, as quoted by Hindustan Times. The project is expected to commence later this month, pending final clearance from the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC).

Details On Phase-Wise Upgrade

The first phase will focus on easing traffic congestion and upgrading external infrastructure. Two underground parking lots are planned to reduce roadside parking chaos. The temple’s entrance will receive a facelift, with the reconstruction of the main gateway, now set to be called Siddhi Gate, featuring intricate marble carvings and a new roof canopy. The flooring around the premises will also be revamped.

The second phase will prioritise visitor convenience and security. A dedicated facilitation centre will be built to help regulate crowds and streamline entry. Security will be ramped up with additional checkpoints. A secondary entrance called Riddhi Gate will be constructed along Kakasaheb Gadgil Marg to improve accessibility. Named after the consorts of Lord Ganesha, Riddhi and Siddhi, symbols of prosperity and spiritual progress, the twin gateways are designed to enhance both functionality and symbolism.

However, the start of construction is contingent upon MMRC approval, as the proposed underground parking facilities intersect with metro infrastructure. “We’ve already incorporated MMRC’s feedback into the revised plans and are expecting their final go-ahead within the next 15 to 20 days,” the BMC official noted, according to the report.

Once approved, the civic body will initiate the tendering process and finalise the execution timeline. The entire project is slated for completion within 12 months from the official start date.
