Mumbai: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has given warning for rainfall with thunderstorms for Mumbai and it's metropolitan regions for the next couple of days. For Thursday, June 5, a Yellow Alert is given for Mumbai, Thane and Raigad districts.

"The warning is issued because of upper air cyclonic circulation over south Gujarat and neighbourhood between 1.5 & 3.1 km above mean sea level. Generally, southwesterly to westerly winds prevail in the lower levels over the region. As a result, there is possibility of rainfall with thunderstorms in the next two days and alert has been issued," said IMD Mumbai scientist Sushma Nair.

The IMD had also issued a Nowcast on Wednesday morning for rainfall. After a break of two days, Mumbai witnessed a brief heavy rainspell on Wednesday morning, while moderate rains were reported since Tuesday night.

As per BMC's disaster management data, in the last 24 hours, the areas which received highest rainfall included: Chembur (62 mm), Matunga (61 mm), Ghatkopar (47 mm), Mankhurd (54 mm), Borivali (45 mm), Bandra (44 mm), BKC (42 mm) and Malabar Hill (40 mm) among others.

"Due to change in weather conditions, the humidity will also increase, however due to drop in temperature and rain spells, the discomfort feeling will not be witnessed," the officer added.

On Wednesday, the Colaba observatory recorded a maximum and minimum temperature at 33.4°C and 23.8°C, which was 3.9°C below normal. While Santacruz observatory recorded a maximum and minimum temperature at 33.7°C and 24.2°C, which was 3.5°C below normal.

For the next 48 hours, Mumbai city and Suburbs will witness generally cloudy skies and maximum temperature is expected to drop. The other districts in Maharashtra where Yellow Alert is issued include: Pune, Nashik, Satara, Solapur, Jalgaon, Dhule and several districts in the Vidharbha region as well.
