Mumbai: The Indian Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Mumbai office has warned of heavy rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning for the next four days, as an upper air cyclonic circulation is likely to form over the east central Arabian Sea off the Karnataka coast on May 21.

“Under the cyclonic influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form, which will also have an impact on Maharashtra, especially in the South Konkan, South Madya Maharashtra and Mumbai, resulting in heavy to very heavy rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching at 50-60 kmph,” said IMD Mumbai Director Shubhangi Bhute.

As per the weather warning released by IMD, the cyclonic circulation is likely to move northwards from May 22 and intensify further, resulting in increased rainfall activity over Maharashtra until May 25. The southwest monsoon is expected to arrive at Kerala in the next four to five days, and the onset of monsoon in Mumbai is expected to be in June first week against the official date of June 11.
