Mumbai Water Stock At 7 Lakes Rises To 9.78% After Heavy Rainfall In Thane, Nashik; No Water Cuts For Now

Heavy rainfall in Thane and Nashik districts—where key dams supplying water to Mumbai are located—has added 17,040 million litres (ML) to the water stock in just 24 hours. This increase is sufficient to meet four days of the city’s water needs, boosting the storage in the seven lakes that supply water to Mumbai.

Mumbai: Heavy rainfall in Thane and Nashik districts—where key dams supplying water to Mumbai are located—has added 17,040 million litres (ML) to the water stock in just 24 hours. This increase is sufficient to meet four days of the city’s water needs, boosting the storage in the seven lakes that supply water to Mumbai.

Although the monsoon arrived early in Mumbai, the catchment areas of the lakes have received little to no rainfall. As a result, the water stock dropped to 1,24,471 ML or 8.60% against their total capacity on Monday. To manage the shortfall, the civic body has begun withdrawing reserve water from the Upper Vaitarna dam, as allowed by the state’s irrigation department.

Meanwhile, the heavy rains in Thane district have boosted the city’s water reserves. As of Tuesday, the total water stock across the seven lakes has risen to 1,41,511 ML, accounting for 9.78% of their total storage capacity. This current level is notably higher than the corresponding figures from the previous two years—77,851 ML in 2024 and 1,22,704 ML in 2023.

"“The weather bureau has predicted favourable rainfall this year, and we remain hopeful that the catchment areas will soon receive heavy showers,” said a senior civic official. “As of now, the situation is comparatively better, especially considering that in recent years, heavy rains typically began only by mid-July. Therefore, there are currently no plans to impose water cuts in Mumbai," he added.

During the same period last year, the water stock had dropped even lower to 5.38% due to which the BMC had imposed a 10% water cut across the city and suburbs from June 5 to July 29. The BMC supplies 3,950 ML of water daily to the city and suburbs. To meet the city’s annual water needs, a total stock of 14.47 lakh ML is required by October 1.
