To address the glaring issue of shortage of water in Mumbai due to ongoing strike of Mumbai Water Tankers Association (MWTA), the BMC is most likely to overtake operations of all wells and water tankers. The MWTA has stopped supplying water to Mumbai from April 10, owing to their demand to revoke Central Ground Water Authority Guidelines of 2020.

BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani told The Free Press Journal that the corporation is considering to overtake operations of all water tankers and wells.

From slums settlements to high-end residential complexes, to commercial establishments and all private and government offices in Mumbai City and Suburbs are facing water shortage since the MWTA went on strike.

Their talks with the government authorities did not yield results. BMC commissioner Gagrani also extended the timeline to apply for the permissions under Ground Water Authority guidelines to June 15. However, the association is firm on revoking the guidelines.

They have announced that until their demands are met, they will not resume water tanker supply in Mumbai. Considering the crisis like situation, the BMC is now likely to take over operations of all water tankers and wells in Mumbai.
