Mumbai: A serious road accident occurred this morning, involving a BEST wet lease bus operated by Mateshwari Travels. The incident took place around 9:20 AM at the Nelco signal, on Route No. 333, near Andheri. A two-wheeler collided with the bus, leaving a 35-year-old man seriously injured.
The MIDC police registered an FIR against BEST bus driver Vijay Patil, 33, a resident of Vikhroli, under sections 281 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 125 (act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and subsequently detained him.
A police officer said that the victim is severely injured and is receiving treatment at Holy Spirit Hospital in Andheri East. The victim’s left hand was severed. The BEST bus driver was hired through a private contractor.
According to BEST officials, the bus (No. 7724), which was en route from Agarkar Chowk to Mahakali Caves, was struck by a two-wheeler that suddenly emerged from a nearby bylane. The rider, identified as Ismail Suratwala, a resident of Mohammed Ali Road, lost control and fell after the collision with the bus’s right rear section.
Tragically, in the aftermath of the crash, the bus’s right rear tyre ran over Suratwala’s left hand, causing severe injuries extending to his upper arm. Suratwala was immediately rushed to Holy Spirit Hospital in Andheri East. Sources say his condition is serious, primarily due to the severity of the arm injury.
The bus involved in the accident has been taken to the MIDC Police Station, where authorities are conducting further investigations. Police officials are reviewing nearby CCTV footage to determine the exact sequence of events leading up to the crash.

Authorities have also confirmed that the two-wheeler involved in the accident bore the registration number MH01CY5891.
