Mumbai: The state-run St George's Hospital is gearing up to launch its long-awaited liver transplant programme in early 2025. The project, which was progressing at a snail's pace, has gained momentum following administrative approval from the department of medical education.

The hospital has already acquired high-end equipment worth Rs1 crore for the surgeries. The programme will benefit countless underprivileged patients who cannot afford the high costs of such surgeries in private hospitals. “An intensive care unit dedicated to liver transplant procedures has already been established at St George's Hospital. However, the programme had not made significant progress until now,” said a hospital official.

With the necessary administrative approvals and a renewed focus, the authorities are confident that the project will become a reality soon. The official said that the state medical education minister Hasan Mushrif has sanctioned the expenditure required to expedite the programme.

“Efforts were made during the previous government to make organ transplant surgeries accessible to the poor at this hospital. While some groundwork was done, we are now reviewing the project to ensure surgeries commence by the new year,” said a senior state medical education officer. A private hospital in south Mumbai, known for its expertise in liver care, will provide assistance, including guidance and support from experienced doctors.

Liver transplants at private hospitals can cost anywhere from Rs 20 lakh to Rs 25 lakh, making them inaccessible to many. In contrast, government hospitals aim to provide the same surgeries at a significantly reduced cost. For instance, KEM Hospital performs liver transplants for Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh. The upcoming programme at St George's Hospital is expected to further reduce costs.

Why St George's Hospital?

The officials from the medical education department explained that liver transplants require special facilities, including isolated operating rooms to prevent infections. St George's Hospital, with its infrastructure and central location, was hence deemed the ideal choice.
