Mumbai and several parts of Maharashtra were hit by heavy rains since the early hours of Monday, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue fresh orange alerts for multiple districts. The downpour marked the return of active monsoon conditions after a brief dry spell.

According to the latest IMD advisory issued at 04:15 pm on July 21, light and moderate rainfall is expected to occur at isolated place across Mumbai over the next 3–4 hours.

An orange alert has been sounded for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg for July 21, with the IMD predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by gusty winds and thunderstorms. Citizens have been advised to remain indoors and take necessary precautions.

The surge in rainfall activity is attributed to a cyclonic circulation over south Odisha and a trough stretching from Karnataka to Andhra Pradesh. Adding to this, a new low-pressure system is expected to form over the north Bay of Bengal around July 24, which could further intensify rainfall in the region.

Forecast Across Maharashtra

Konkan and Madhya Maharashtra Ghat regions are likely to receive widespread heavy to very heavy rainfall through the week.

Marathwada may experience isolated heavy showers, especially on July 21.

Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds ranging between 40–50 kmph are expected in many areas.

Fishermen Warning

Squally weather is forecast along the north Maharashtra coast and south Maharashtra-Goa coast from July 21 to 25. Wind speeds may reach up to 60 kmph. The IMD has strongly advised fishermen not to venture into the sea during this period due to rough conditions.

As monsoon systems gain strength again, authorities have urged residents in vulnerable zones to stay alert and follow official advisories. Emergency response teams across coastal districts have also been put on standby.
