Mumbai: Heavy rains lashed Mumbai and its surrounding districts on Thursday, the incessant rains are expected to continue on Friday. Areas such as CSMT, Byculla, Kurla, and Mulund have been experiencing heavy rainfall overnight, along with moderate showers early this morning. Andheri subway was reported closed for traffic after incessant rainfall.
BMC's Disaster Management Department warned of heavy rainspells in the city for next two hours, as per an update at around 9:30 am. Meanwhile, Mumbai Airport reported minor flight disruptions today.
IMD Issues Orange Alert
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and Thane, while Palghar district is under a yellow alert. The warnings come as the monsoon remains active over the Konkan coast, increasing the likelihood of moderate to heavy rainfall across these regions.
Nowcast Warning Predicts Moderate Showers
The IMD's nowcast warning, issued at 7:20 am today, predicts moderate rain spells in isolated parts of Mumbai, Thane and Palghar over the next three to four hours. The weather department urged citizens to remain cautious and plan their travel accordingly.

In Mumbai, the day began with overcast skies and moderate to heavy rainfall is expected throughout the day. There is a possibility of extremely heavy rainfall in isolated areas, particularly in low-lying zones. The maximum temperature is expected to settle around 30 degrees Celsius, while the minimum may hover near 23 degrees. Winds along the coast are likely to blow at speeds of 20 to 30 kmph, with occasional gusts accompanied by rain.
A high tide of approximately 4.5 meters is expected around late afternoon. This could aggravate waterlogging problems in the city, especially if heavy rain continues into the afternoon. The civic authorities have asked residents to avoid venturing out unnecessarily and to stay updated on traffic and rail announcements.
Impact On Local Trains, Air Travel & Traffic
Mumbai’s local train services, which are the city’s lifeline, are running smoothly on all suburban lines with minor delays, as per popular commuter app, m-Indicator. However, services could be impacted due to waterlogging on the tracks.
Air Travel Affected Due To Heavy Rains
Minor flight disruptions were reported at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in the morning today due to incessant rains. IndiGo airlines warned of severe weather through a travel advisory.
"With heavy rainfall and thunderstorms expected over Kolkata and Mumbai, we’re seeing a chance of delays and slower traffic to and from the airport. While we can’t control the skies, we’re doing everything possible to keep your journey steady on the ground," read the advisory.
"Please check your flight status and consider giving yourself a little cushion of time to reach the airport. We’ll keep you posted and we’re always around if you need help," it further said.
Andheri Subway Closed For Traffic
"Due to 1-1.5 ft water logging, the Andheri Subway is closed for vehicular movement. Traffic is diverted via the Gokhale Bridge & Thackeray Bridge," Mumbai Traffic Police posted on X, informing about the temporary closure of Andheri subway.
Road traffic in several low-lying areas like Sion, Dadar, Kurla and Andheri subway is also likely to face disruptions. Commuters are advised to check live updates before stepping out and carry rain gear.
Mumbai Police Issues Advisory
Mumbai Police issued advisory for citizens urging them to stay indoors and avoid travel amid heavy rains. "Due to heavy rainfall in Mumbai and nearby districts, citizens are advised to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary, avoid coastal areas and drive cautiously. Our officials and staff are on high alert and ready to assist Mumbaikars. In case of any emergency, please dial 100 / 112 / 103," said Mumbai Police in a update on X.
Weather Update For Navi Mumbai, Thane & Palghar
In Navi Mumbai, areas such as Vashi, Nerul, Koparkhairane and Ghansoli may experience light to moderate rain with the possibility of intense spells later in the day. Similar conditions are expected in Thane city and its adjoining areas like Kalyan, Dombivali and Bhiwandi. In rural Thane, very heavy rainfall is likely and riverbanks and nullahs may overflow due to continuous showers.
Palghar district is expected to see light to moderate rainfall through the day, particularly in areas like Vasai, Dahanu, Talasari, Jawhar and Boisar. The IMD has indicated that the intensity of rain may pick up by evening. Water accumulation in low-lying rural areas remains a concern. Residents are urged to stay alert and avoid unnecessary travel.
