Mumbai: Mumbai continued to battle intense monsoon showers as heavy overnight rains disrupted daily life across several parts of the city on Wednesday, July 23. According to an official update from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the city received substantial rainfall in the past 24 hours, leading to waterlogging, traffic diversions and structural damages.
Several Incidents Reported In Past 24 Hours
As per BMC’s data, Mumbai city recorded 47.77 mm of rain, the eastern suburbs 33.1 mm, and the western suburbs the highest at 53.92 mm. In addition to the downpour, seven incidents of short circuits, 11 tree or branch fall cases and two instances of partial house collapses were reported, one of them in Bhandup. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported in any monsoon-related incidents in the last 24 hours.
Rains Lash City, Andheri Subway Closed
Several areas in South Mumbai, including Byculla, Lalbaug, CSMT and Churchgate, witnessed intense rainfall overnight and during the early hours on Wednesday. Commuters faced delays and diversions during the morning rush as waterlogging took a toll on mobility. The Andheri Subway was shut down for vehicular movement due to nearly 1-1.5 feet of water accumulation, prompting Mumbai Traffic Police to divert vehicles via Gokhale Bridge and Thackeray Bridge.
Local Trains Running Late
Local train services, the city’s lifeline, also bore the brunt of the rain, with Central and Harbour lines reporting delays of up to 15–20 minutes. Rail commuters were advised to check train statuses before travel.
Alert Issued For More Heavy Rains
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for July 23 and an orange alert for Thursday, July 24, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall likely to exceed 150 mm within 24 to 36 hours. The IMD has predicted that moderate to heavy showers will continue across Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, and Ratnagiri, with intensity expected to rise from late Wednesday morning through the night.
Since early Tuesday, showers have been consistently reported across Mumbai, Thane district, Kalyan, Dombivli and Navi Mumbai. With the onset of the holy Shravan month nearing, the revival of monsoon has brought both much-needed rain and renewed concern over flooding and civic readiness.
