Mumbai: Western Railway has collected a staggering Rs 43.54 crore in fines from ticketless and irregular travellers during the months of April and May 2025. Notably, Rs 11.71 crore of this amount was collected from the Mumbai Suburban section alone.
According to Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railway, Vineet Abhishek during the month of May 2025, an amount of Rs 21.65 crore was recovered through detection of 3.02 lakh ticketless/irregular passengers, including unbooked luggage cases. Also, in the month of May, 2025 WR realized fines amounting to Rs 5.71 crore through detection of more than 1.04 Lakh cases over Mumbai Suburban section.
To prevent unauthorized entry in AC local trains, frequent surprise ticket checking drives are also being carried out. As a result of these drives, more than 10300 unauthorized passengers have been penalized in April to May 2025 and almost Rs 35 lakhs collected in fines.
"The massive enforcement effort was part of Western Railway’s ongoing commitment to ensure a comfortable and hassle-free travel experience for genuine passengers. Intensive ticket-checking drives were conducted across various train categories — including suburban locals, Mail/Express services, passenger trains, and holiday specials — to curb the widespread issue of ticketless travel" said an official.
According to WR, the success of this operation can be attributed to the dedication of the ticket-checking staff, guided by senior commercial officers. These drives were carried out strategically and consistently throughout the two-month period.
In April, a total collection of Rs 21.89 crore was recorded, which includes Rs. 6 crore from the Mumbai Suburban section. According to WR, during the month of April 2025, an amount of Rs 21.89 crore was recovered through the detection of 3.10 lakh ticketless/irregular passengers, including cases of unbooked luggage.
Additionally, in April, Western Railway (WR) realized fines amounting to Rs 6 crore through the detection of more than 1 lakh cases in the Mumbai Suburban section. To prevent unauthorized entry into AC local trains, frequent surprise ticket-checking drives are also being conducted. As a result of these drives, more than 6,000 unauthorized passengers were penalized in April 2025, and Rs 20.24 lakh was collected in fines.
