Mumbai: Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer Sameer Wankhede has filed a defamation lawsuit against a woman in the Andheri court, accusing her of damaging his reputation through false and baseless claims on social media.

The woman allegedly made unverified accusations on X (formerly Twitter), linking Wankhede to the late actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s case without any evidence. According to Wankhede, these rumors have not only tarnished his professional image but also caused him mental distress.

The complaint further states that the accused woman targeted constitutional authorities and central investigative agencies with baseless allegations, aiming to undermine their credibility. Wankhede’s lawyer, Malika Shirzade, asserted, "Legal action was necessary to stop this smear campaign. Freedom of speech doesn't justify spreading falsehoods to harm someone's reputation. The claims against Wankhede are completely false."

Backing this, advocate Zahra Baldiwala emphasized the importance of defamation laws in protecting individuals from character assassination, stating that they are determined to prevent further damage to Wankhede's image.

The lawsuit seeks substantial compensation for defamation and requests an immediate injunction to prevent the woman from making further false statements. The case is now before the judicial authorities.
