Mumbai: A social activist has urged the municipal commissioner to create a permanent monitoring system to prevent illegal constructions in the city. The activist has alleged that multiple illegal constructions have been given a freeway in the city’s L ward’s beat no. 161 due to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) being hands in glove with the land mafia.
Allegations Against BMC Officials
Saki Naka-based social activist Sabban Hindustani has alleged that multiple illegal residential and commercial constructions have surfaced on a large scale in L ward’s beat no. 161, which comprises parts of Saki Naka and Kurla.
Reconstructed After Demolition
In a letter to the municipal commissioner dated July 28, Hindustani has alleged that some of the illegal structures were demolished earlier, but have been reconstructed due to the connivance of the officials and the land mafia.
Public Safety At Risk
The activist has alleged that the illegal constructions have endangered the lives and properties of local citizens, affected basic utilities like electricity, water and sewage as well as increased chaos and insecurity in the region.
Call For Civic Action
The activist has demanded the civic chief to investigate the matter and take strict action against the land mafia and the officials supporting them. He also demanded that a permanent monitoring system should be created to prevent such constructions in future.

Chandivali Under Spotlight
“Among the four assembly constituencies in the L ward, Chandivali constituency has the highest number of illegal constructions and dumpings. In the past, whenever I have complained against such structures, the civic body issues a notice but there is no concrete action, which gives a free hand to such illegal constructions. Therefore, we need to have a permanent solution to this,” said Hindustani.
