Mumbai: In a major step toward the redevelopment of Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar in Ghatkopar, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is set to receive cleared land from the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) soon possibly by this month, as per sources. The land handover paves the way for the launch of the first phase of MMRDA’s large-scale first such housing project aimed at rehabilitating thousands of slum dwellers.
The redevelopment, spread across 33.15 hectares, will be executed in four phases. The initial phase will begin on the 17-acre parcel where the SRA has already removed 4,053 slums. Construction will commence soon after MMRDA appoints contractors, with the first phase set to deliver housing for 8,500 local residents.

The SRA has completed the process of identifying 14,500 eligible families who will be resettled under the project. Once the land is formally handed over, MMRDA will move ahead with construction planning and execution.
The Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar area currently comprises around 16,000 slums. The redevelopment initiative is part of a broader government push to improve housing and infrastructure in the region. In parallel, the MMRDA has also begun work on the Eastern Freeway extension, which will improve connectivity between Mumbai and Thane. This redevelopment project marks a significant urban transformation effort, with the dual goals of providing dignified housing and boosting regional connectivity.
