A passenger turned violent and damaged railway property after being caught traveling in a First Class compartment of a Virar fast local with a Second Class ticket on Saturday, i.e., August 2. The altercation occurred around 3:00 pm and led to injuries to both railway staff and the passenger involved.
According to sources, the incident took place between Andheri and Borivali. Shamsher Ibrahim, Deputy Chief Ticket Inspector (Dy. CTI), was on duty conducting routine ticket inspections when three passengers were found traveling in the First Class coach with only Second Class tickets. One of them, it was later discovered, did not possess a valid ticket at all between Andheri and Borivali.
"The passengers were asked to deboard at Borivali station and were escorted to the ticket checkers office for further inquiry and issuance of fines. However, the situation quickly escalated. One of the passengers became agitated and violently attacked railway property, including damaging a computer CPU and other office equipment," said an official.
Railway Staff and Passenger Injured
Railway officials and the passenger reportedly sustained minor injuries during the confrontation. Immediate medical attention was provided to all injured parties.
An on-duty Government Railway Police (GRP) official intervened and took the aggressive passenger into custody. Legal action is currently underway.
“The safety of passengers and staff is our highest priority,” the Divisional Railway Manager stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter). “Strict action will be taken against anyone found violating rules or causing harm, with the help of the RPF and GRP.”
Western Railway authorities have reiterated their zero-tolerance policy toward violence and fare evasion and have assured the public that all necessary measures are in place to prevent such incidents in the future, stated an officer, adding that further investigation is ongoing by GRP Borivali.
