Mumbai: A new steel bridge connecting Masjid and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) stations will improve traffic movement towards P'D Mello Road. The new bridge, which is set to replace the 154-year-old Carnac Bridge that was taken down in November 2022 for safety reasons, is expected to be in use by early next week pending final approvals.

To honor the city's heritage, six basalt stones from the original bridge, engraved in various languages, will be restored on the new bridge. Uncovered during demolition, these stones from 1858 and 1868 hold importance due to their representation of maritime trade.

The building project encountered setbacks lasting more than six years because of encroachments and existing utility installations. The new ₹60-crore bridge measures 70 meters long and 9.5 meters wide, with four lanes instead of the former two-lane setup, effectively doubling traffic capacity. It will feature contemporary signage and LED illumination for enhanced safety and visibility.

BMC authorities have effectively carried out load tests and are currently seeking approvals from the traffic police and Indian Railways. Additional Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Bangar stated that the new bridge is intended to reduce traffic jams in South Mumbai and improve travel efficiency. The project, even with early difficulties, is progressing towards completion. The bridge represents both a significant progress in infrastructure and pays tribute to the region's historical heritage.

New Carnac Bridge Eases Connectivity

The Carnac Bridge in Mumbai connects P. D'Mello Road to the area between Masjid and CSMT stations, facilitating travel between South Mumbai and eastern suburbs. It enables direct access to P. D'Mello Road and serves as a critical east-west link. The bridge supports connectivity to the Eastern Freeway and the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, aiding in access to Navi Mumbai. The original bridge, which was demolished for safety reasons, similarly connected P. D'Mello Road to Masjid Bunder, reinforcing its importance in the region's transport infrastructure.
