Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha has written to the BMC chief, appealing for a balanced approach in the wake of restrictions imposed on pigeon feeding in the city. While respecting the court decision, Lodha has emphasised the need to consider the sentiments of bird lovers, monks and the public.

Concerns Over Pigeon Starvation and Public Health

In his letter, Lodha highlighted a growing concern that pigeons are dying on the streets due to the sudden lack of food, creating a potential public health issue. He said that as a responsible civic authority, the BMC is expected to handle the issue with sensitivity.

Respect for Court Order, But Compassion Needed

The minister made several key suggestions, including alternative arrangements for feeding pigeons, open spaces like the BKC, Mahalaxmi Racecourse, Aarey Colony and Sanjay Gandhi National Park be considered as regulated feeding zones. Decisions must respect long-standing religious and cultural practices, said Lodha, adding that a common ground must be found to address the issue.

Lodha urged the BMC to adopt a comprehensive and humane strategy that balances public health priorities along with compassion for animals.
