The Malad police and Crime Branch Unit 12 arrested a 32-year-old man from Bihar for allegedly posing as an IAS officer and roaming around Mumbai using a fake identity. The accused, Chandramohan Prasad Rambali Singh, stayed for two days at the Customs Department’s Panhala guest house in BKC and used a car bearing a ‘Government of India’ plate to move around the city.

Acting on a tip-off, police laid a trap on June 28 outside the Silver Oak Hotel in Malad West. Around 12.45pm, they intercepted the suspect’s car and found Singh sitting in the back seat. When questioned, he produced a fake IAS identity card. The police confirmed the ID was forged and took him into custody.

Singh admitted he was not an IAS officer and revealed his true identity as a resident of Kheshrahi village in Bihar’s Vaishali district. The police seized a fake Ministry of Home Affairs ID card, 16 visiting cards featuring the national emblem, and the vehicle. He failed to provide credible answers about the forged documents.

Earlier, on June 27, Singh had shown the same fake ID at a checkpoint in Dadar, which initially helped him evade suspicion.

Fardan Saif, 24, the car’s driver, claimed he was simply following a friend’s request to drive Singh around. Police suspect Singh may have attempted to cheat others and are probing how he gained entry into the Customs guest house. An investigation is underway.
