Mumbai: A day after the Maharashtra government finalised the master plan for developing Dharavi, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said on Thursday that the project will not only provide housing but also significantly enhance the quality of life for its residents.

Of the total land area, 174 hectares have been earmarked for redevelopment, which will be carried out jointly by the Slum Rehabilitation Authority and the Dharavi Redevelopment Project.

This master plan will soon be presented in Cabinet for approval. With 80% stake held by the Adani Group and 20% by the state government, the Rs 95,790-crore mega project aims to overhaul the 253-hectare sprawl into a modern, livable urban space.

A key highlight of the project is the construction of a multi-modal transit hub, with direct connectivity to Metro Line 11. A total of 108.99 hectares will undergo development.

The plan includes the rehabilitation of 72,000 units, 49,832 residential and 12,458 industrial/commercial and is expected to benefit nearly 6 lakh people.

To ensure transparency and efficiency, the project will leverage advanced technologies such as digital twin tech and tenant management systems. Drone and LiDAR-based surveys have already covered 79,455 households.

Shinde also noted that a committee headed by a former Chief Justice has been set up to oversee the rehabilitation of 296 religious structures. All decisions, he said, will be taken in consultation with Dharavi residents and in accordance with legal norms.
