Mumbai: In a high-level review meeting at Sahyadri Guest House, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis directed the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to accelerate the much-anticipated twin tunnel project connecting Orange Gate and Marine Drive.

Emphasizing the importance of coordination and timely execution, the CM underscored the project’s significance in addressing Mumbai’s escalating traffic congestion.

The twin tunnels are part of a broader infrastructure initiative aimed at easing the city’s traffic woes. CM Fadnavis highlighted that the project will play a crucial role in decongesting P. D’Mello Road and establishing a smooth link between the Eastern Freeway and Atal Setu.

Preliminary activities—including tunnel boring, land acquisition, and pile foundation work are currently underway. A revised technical plan has also been developed in collaboration with the traffic department.

The Chief Minister also instructed that necessary upgrades along S.V. Patel Road and Marine Drive be executed as planned, to complement the tunnel’s integration with existing roadways. Once operational, the twin tunnels are expected to significantly cut down travel time, ease congestion, and lower pollution levels across South Mumbai.

Describing the project as a transformative step for the city’s urban transit network, CM Fadnavis said it would not only streamline movement across the region but also drive economic growth and enhance connectivity in South Mumbai. The target for project completion has been set for December 2028, with the aim of maximizing commuter benefits and minimizing costs.

Key officials present at the meeting included Chief Secretary Sujata Saunik, BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani, Principal Secretary Ashwini Bhide, Secretary Shrikar Pardeshi, MMRDA Commissioner Sanjay Mukherjee, Special Police Commissioner Deven Bharti, and Additional Metropolitan Commissioner Vikram Kumar.
