Mumbai: With the aim of increasing safety in local trains, the Central Railways have now started installing CCTV cameras in motorman cabins. Currently, 50 CCTV systems have been installed in 25 local trains of Central Railway, 30 more systems have been ordered for 15 more local trains. Officials said that the cost of two motorman cabins in one local train is expected to be approximately Rs 1.24 lakh. This system has been installed in 26 local trains of the Western Railway.
While travelling in Mumbai local trains, passengers often die accidentally by falling from the train or crossing the tracks. Since the cause of accidents is often not clear, the railway administration is unable to find out the reasons for this. Also, while providing compensation to passengers, the railway is unable to clearly present its side in court.

Now, this camera will help in finding the exact cause of the accident. Is there any external factor involved in this during the accident? Is it the fault of the passengers? Where was the motorman's attention during the accident? Did he follow all the instructions and obey all the signals? It will be possible to check many such factors.
In case of an accident, the actions of the motorman, his response can all be checked from the CCTV footage. The stressful situation on the motorman can be recorded. The right policy can be decided by understanding their problems.
It will help in the investigation The motorman of the Central Railway was against this system; but after the Mumbra accident, the railway has put this work on the fast track. Since the cause of the Mumbra accident is not clear, it will help in the investigation if such incidents happen again.
