Mumbai: As temperatures soar during the ongoing heatwave, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued crucial fire safety guidelines to prevent fire hazards caused by electrical appliances. Shared via an X post on Tuesday, the BMC emphasised proactive safety measures and urged citizens to remain alert and follow necessary precautions at home, in offices, and public places.

The Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB), under the BMC, highlighted the importance of inspecting electrical systems regularly. Residents are advised to check electrical wiring, plugs, switchboards, and appliances frequently to ensure there are no signs of damage. Old or faulty wiring must be repaired by a certified electrician to prevent potential short circuits or fire outbreaks.

Here Is X Post Shared By BMC

An X post shared by BMC stated, "Stay alert, stay safe, adhere to Mumbai Fire Brigade’s guidelines to prevent fire risks from electrical appliances during the heatwave. In case of fire, contact 101 immediately."

The BMC also stressed switching off appliances like fans, air conditioners, televisions, mixers, geysers, and irons after use. Overloading electrical sockets must be avoided, and devices should not be charged overnight while sleeping. Staircases and exit routes should remain unobstructed at all times to allow safe evacuation if necessary.

In addition, regular maintenance of air-conditioning systems is encouraged, especially during the hot season. Fire extinguishers should be kept at homes, offices, and shops, and residents should be trained in their proper use. The post also advised hospitals, clinics, and nursing homes to strictly maintain fire safety systems and conduct timely audits.

The BMC and MFB have previously conducted several fire safety awareness drives across various locations in Mumbai. These initiatives aim to educate the public and reduce the risk of fire incidents during extreme weather conditions.

In case of a fire emergency, citizens are urged to immediately dial 101 for assistance from the Mumbai Fire Brigade. With responsible practices and heightened awareness, the BMC hopes to ensure public safety throughout the heatwave.
