Mumbai: Following its pre-monsoon survey, the BMC has identified 134 dilapidated buildings across Mumbai, down from 188 last year. Of these, 57 structures have been successfully vacated and are under process of demolition. However, 77 buildings remain occupied, with some under court-imposed stay orders on eviction.

The dangerous buildings identified by the BMC fall under the 'C1' category, indicating they require immediate evacuation and demolition to prevent potential disasters.

According to the pre-monsoon survey report, the highest number of such structures are located in Bandra, Khar, and Santacruz West, along with Goregaon—each accounting for 15 buildings. These are followed by Jogeshwari, Andheri East and Ghatkopar, with 11 buildings each marked unsafe.

The civic body is pursuing legal measures to lift these stays and expedite evacuations to prevent potential tragedies during the upcoming monsoon season.

"Measures like disconnecting electricity and water supply have been taken to compel residents to vacate, but they remain unmoved. We have managed to reduce the number of dilapidated structures over the past few years, but the risk persists," said a civic official.

The list of dilapidated buildings is uploaded on the BMC’s official website, www.mcgm.gov.in. As per civic policy, buildings over 30 years old are eligible for structural audits. Based on these assessments, the BMC annually classifies structures into various categories to determine whether they require complete demolition or can undergo repairs, ensuring safety ahead of the monsoon season.

Dilapidated buildings - 134

Vacated - 57

Occupied - 77

Highest number - Bandra West, Khar, Santacruz, Goregaon, Jogeshwari, Andheri East and Ghatkopar.
