Mumbai: In a major demolition drive, the BMC's S Ward removed 75 unauthorised constructions on Kakkayya Shetty Road in Bhandup West on Wednesday. The demolished structures included 62 homes and 13 shops that had encroached upon the road.

As a result of this action, the road, which was previously only 3 meters wide, stretching from Hind Rectifier Company to Kakkayya Shetty, has now been expanded to 18.30 meters. This widening is expected to improve traffic flow and overall accessibility in the area, claims the civic official.

As per the civic official from S Ward, "The stretch of road from Hind Rectifier Company to Kakkayya Shetty Road had been narrowed by approximately 3 meters due to encroachments. As a result, only one vehicle could pass at a time when traveling from this road to Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg (LBS). Citizens heading to areas like Gavdevi and Tulshetpada in Bhandup had to take a detour of two kilometers."

To alleviate the traffic woes and provide relief to commuters, the BMC took action against the encroachments on Wednesday, initiating the road-widening process.

Two bulldozers, two JCBs, two other vehicles, 80 workers, 30 engineers, and 15 police personnel were deployed during the operation. A total of 75 structures were demolished, consisting of ground floors with one additional upper floor. As per the BMC the eligible residents had already been rehabilitated before the demolition.

Following this intervention, the road from Hind Rectifier Company to Kakkayya Shetty has been expanded to 18.30 meters in width, significantly improving traffic flow. "Citizens now only need to travel 50 meters, instead of the previous 2-kilometer detour, to reach their destination," stated the official.
