Mumbai Monsoon Mayhem: 2 Dead, 5 Injured In Wall And Pit Collapse Incidents; Over 60 Rain-Related Mishaps Reported

As per the BMC disaster management information, a 13-year-old boy, Faisan Khan, lost his life after falling into a pit filled with water near the BKC Metro station. As per the reports, the minor went towards the pit despite the barricading by MMRCL and a signboard of ‘Danger’.

Two persons, including a minor, lost their lives and five suffered injuries due to the disaster incidents in Mumbai during the heavy downpour on Monday, June 16. In 24 hours (June 16, 8 am to June 17, 8 am), Mumbai City recorded 63.09 mm rainfall, eastern suburbs recorded 83.95 mm rainfall and western suburbs recorded 92.37 mm of rainfall.

As per the BMC disaster management information, a 13-year-old boy, Faisan Khan, lost his life after falling into a pit filled with water near the BKC Metro station. As per the reports, the minor went towards the pit despite the barricading by MMRCL and a signboard of ‘Danger’. 

In another incident, a 28-year-old man, Sonelal Prasad, lost his life after being trapped under the debris in Andheri West. Prasad was a labourer at a building construction site near Saileela Business Park on Andheri-Kurla Road, where a pile of mud collapsed due to heavy rainfall, trapping him under the debris. The incident was reported at 7.43 pm, and the victim was removed from the debris by the Mumbai Fire Brigade at midnight. He was taken to Cooper hospital by the firemen, where he was declared dead on arrival.

Meanwhile, four women suffered injuries in two different mishaps. At 11.34 on Monday, an incident of wall collapse was reported from Indira Krupa Housing Society in Bandra East. The building was under construction, and a wall collapsed on the chawl next to it. Two women were injured in the incident, one of whom is critically injured and admitted to Guru Nanak Hospital. In Natwarnagar in Jogeshwari East, a terrace wall collapsed of the 17-storeyed building- Garhwal Darshan, which was under repairs. Two women were injured in the mishap, one of whom is seriously injured and admitted to HBT Trauma Hospital. 

While a tree collapsed at Gate No. 4 at Goregaon Film City, injuring a 48-year-old man.

In the period of 24 hours, until 8 am on Tuesday, a total of 13 incidents of wall collapses were reported, 44 incidents of tree collapses and 15 incidents of short circuit were reported.

Mumbai saw the revival of monsoon this week and was lashed with incessant rainfall from Sunday evening to Monday night. The island city has already witnessed more rainfall this year compared to the same day last monsoon. Since the onset of monsoon, until June 16 this year, the Colaba observatory has recorded 324.4 mm rainfall and the Santacruz observatory recorded 288 mm rainfall. While until the same day last year, Colaba and Santacruz observatories had recorded 210.6 mm and 128.3 mm rainfall, respectively.

On Tuesday, Mumbai witnessed gusty winds and light showers. The city is placed under Yellow Alert till June 19 and heavy rainfall at isolated places is forecasted.
