Mumbai: Mumbai's Metro Line 9 project, connecting Dahisar East to Mira-Bhayandar, is rapidly moving towards operational readiness. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has announced that the energisation of the Overhead Equipment (OHE) on a 5 km stretch between Dahisar East and Kashigaon will reportedly be completed by May 10.
Metro Line 9 is a fully elevated 11 km corridor, forming an extension of Metro Line 7, which runs from Gundavali to Dahisar East and was commissioned in 2023. The Line 9 project has been divided into two phases. Phase 1 covers the stretch from Dahisar East to Kashigaon and is currently undergoing electrification. Phase 2 will extend the line further to the Subhash Chandra Bose Stadium in Mira Bhayandar.

About The Energisation Process
The energisation process involves activating a 25,000 Volt AC overhead traction system. This step is critical in initiating full-scale, dynamic testing of the metro trains. These trials will include evaluating vital systems such as train control, platform communication, safety and passenger service reliability, ensuring the line is fully functional before opening to the public.
According to a Times of India report quoting MMRDA, 85 per cent of civil and system works for the corridor have already been completed. With the power supply soon to be operational, dynamic train trials are set to begin, bringing the line closer to its official launch.
MMRDA Accelerates Metro Line-9 Work, Aims Phase 1 Launch By Year-End
Meanwhile, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is fast-tracking the construction of Metro Line-9, with a goal to open its first phase, from Dahisar East to Kashigaon, by the end of this year. The move marks a significant step forward in expanding Mumbai’s metro network and easing commuter movement in the western suburbs.
In a strategic meeting held earlier in March, Metropolitan Commissioner Dr Sanjay Mukherjee (IAS) engaged with Anil Kumar Saini, Managing Director of Alstom India, to review the status of signalling works on Metro Line-9 and other metro corridors. The discussions focused on accelerating the project timeline and incorporating international best practices to ensure efficient and timely completion.
Metro Line 9: Key Upgrade For Western Suburb Commuters
Metro Line 9 serves as a vital extension of the existing Metro Line-7 (Gundavali to Dahisar East), stretching the network further north into the Mira-Bhayandar region. Spanning a total distance of 11.38 km, Line-9 is being developed in two phases. Phase 1, currently under active construction, will connect Dahisar East to Kashigaon, while Phase 2 will extend the corridor up to Subhash Chandra Bose Ground in Mira-Bhayandar.
Once operational, Metro Line 9 will have eight elevated stations: Dahisar East, Pandurang Wadi, Mira Gaon, Kashigaon, Sai Baba Nagar, Meditya Nagar, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Garden and Subhash Chandra Bose Ground. These stations are expected to enhance connectivity for thousands of commuters between the western suburbs and the Mira-Bhayandar region.
