Mumbai: Man Dies By Suicide After Consuming Rat Poison Outside Developer's Office In Jogeshwari Over Unpaid Rent In SRA Project

According to the police, preliminary investigations revealed that the builder had not paid him rent for the last three to four years his home was included in an SRA (Slum Rehabilitation Authority) project.

A 40-year-old man allegedly died by suicide after consuming rat poison in front of the Omkar Developers' office in Jogeshwari West. The incident occurred on Wednesday at 11 p.m. The police have filed an accidental death report and will register a case if someone is found guilty after the investigation. 

According to the police, preliminary investigations revealed that the builder had not paid him rent for the last three to four years his home was included in an SRA (Slum Rehabilitation Authority) project. 

As per the police, the deceased was identified as Ahmad Shaikh, a tailor who resided in Jogeshwari West with his wife and two children. His house had been included in the SRA project, and he had moved into a rented house. As per the rules, the builder is required to pay rent to people whose houses are demolished. However, the builder had not paid rent for the last three to four years.

Despite repeated follow-ups, the builder reportedly told him that he had abandoned the redevelopment project. This caused Shaikh significant stress, which led him to take the extreme step. The bystanders transported him to  the Hindu Hriday Samrat Bal Thackeray Trauma Hospital nearby  where the doctor declared him dead.

Omkar Developer stated in their statement, "We are not associated with the concerned project anymore. Sensitive to the matter, we will be cooperating with the authorities."

Senior Police Inspector Sambhaji Jadhav of Meghwadi Police Station stated that an ADR (Accidental Death Report) has been filed. The family of the deceased has not yet lodged a complaint against anyone. Jadhav further mentioned that after the funeral, the police will take appropriate legal action based on the family's complaint.Omkar Developer stated in their statement, "We are not associated with the concerned project anymore.
