Mumbai: A 37-year-old history-sheeter, identified only as Mohammad, was arrested in connection with a firing incident in Mumbai’s Dharavi, where a woman sustained a gunshot injury to her hand while out shopping. The incident occurred late on Sunday night, July 27, along the bustling 90 Feet Road. The accused was traced and arrested from Trombay’s Chhita Camp by Shahunagar Police and has been remanded to four-day police custody, Mumbai Police told IANS on Friday, August 1.
The victim, 32-year-old Sarvar Begum Shaikh, originally from Motihari district in Bihar, was rushed to Sion Hospital after the bullet pierced her palm. Doctors successfully removed the bullet through surgery, and her condition is now reported as stable.
Details On The Shooting Incident
According to cops, Sarvar had stepped out for groceries around 9:30 pm when she suddenly felt a sharp pain in her hand. Initially unaware that she had been shot, she realised the severity only when blood began to pour from the wound. Her husband, a fruit vendor who has been living in Mumbai for the past seven years, helped rush her to the hospital.
The police launched a probe soon after the incident was reported. Sarvar and her husband have both provided statements to the authorities. Officers confirmed that neither the victim nor her family have any known enmity with locals or previous threats and no personal motive has yet been identified.
Multiple CCTVs Scanned To Trace Down Accused
Police said they are examining all possible angles, including whether Sarvar was a random victim or caught in crossfire. Multiple CCTV cameras in the area are being scanned for clues on the shooter’s identity and movements before and after the incident.
Initially, a case was registered against an unidentified person under Section 109 (attempt to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and relevant provisions of the Indian Arms Act. With Mohammad’s arrest, police are probing his possible role in other local crimes, given his prior criminal record.
