A horrifying incident unfolded in Mumbai's Sion where a female resident doctor was assaulted by a patient and relatives who were in a drunken state. The incident took place around 3.30 am on Sunday. The doctors are in the process of registering a police complaint.
"The patient arrived in casualty after midnight in an intoxicated state with 7-8 relatives. He was given ENT but he started abusing the female doctor, escalating to assault," Dr Akshay More from Sion Hospital informed.
Mumbai's Sion Hospital (Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital) is run by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). It can be noted that the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) at BMC have been on strike supporting the nationwide protest on the security of resident doctors. The residents doctors at BMC hospitals have suspended elective services like OPDs and OTs, however, the Emergency services are on.

Speaking with FPJ, a member of BMC MARD said, "We are at the Sion police station to register a complaint. We are not sure about the rule of 'Institutional FIR'. The Dean of Sion Hospital has taken the matter into serious notice."
The incident comes during the ongoing nationwide protests against the rape and murder of the female resident doctor in Kolkata's RG Kar medical college.

The Union health ministry on Friday said that heads of all the institutions will be responsible for filling an 'Institutional FIR' within six hours of any incidence of violence against a healthcare worker on duty. The office memorandum was sent to all central government-run medical colleges, including AIIMS and principals to all medical colleges across the country.
