A 44-year-old businessman lost over Rs 24 lakh to cyber fraudsters, who posed as bankers and made him download a malicious Android Package Kit (APK) file. Mumbai: A 44-year-old businessman lost over Rs 24 lakh to cyber fraudsters, who posed as bankers and made him download a malicious Android Package Kit (APK) file. In banking APK con, scammers trick users into installing fake banking apps through phishing links or messages, stealing personal and financial information.

According to the police, the Dharashiv resident, who is into dairy business, received a WhatsApp call from an unknown person on March 27. Claiming to be a banker, the caller told the complainant that his bank account needs to be updated, else it would be suspended, said the police.

Subsequently, the fraud took the man's PAN and Aadhaar card details and sent an APK file, bearing the bank's name, for download. Shortly, Rs 24.47 lakh got debited from his account in back to back 26 transactions.

“Only use the Google Play store or Apple App store to download banking apps. Don't click on suspicious links or SMS,” cautioned a police officer.
