Mumbai: A shocking case of alleged physical and mental harassment has emerged in Mankhurd, where a man, previously jailed for rape after impregnating a woman he met on Instagram and then refusing to marry her, reportedly remarried the same victim only to torment her again, upon his release. The Trombay Police have registered a case against the husband and his family under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

According to the FIR, the 33-year-old victim, an event manager residing in Dahisar, first encountered the accused from Mankhurd in 2019 when he sought her hand in marriage through her father. Though her father declined, the man subsequently befriended her on Instagram.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, he offered help to the woman’s family and gradually gained their trust. He allegedly promised to marry her and established a physical relationship, which resulted in her pregnancy. When he later refused to marry her, the woman filed a complaint against him at Sir J.J. Marg Police Station.

Based on her complaint, police registered a case against him on May 5, 2022, under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). A month after his release from prison, the man re-established contact with the victim via chat, apologized, and proposed marriage.

The woman's family agreed, but he then demanded ₹10 lakh, claiming he needed to repay debts. The victim's father reportedly gave him the ₹10 lakh and also provided gold ornaments worth five tolas (including a mangalsutra, necklace, bangles, and earrings) for the wedding.

The couple married on December 9, 2023, at a temple hall in Kandivali. Soon after the marriage, the victim alleges that her husband and in-laws began subjecting her to physical and mental torture.

Her mother-in-law, father-in-law, and sister-in-law allegedly taunted her, saying, "You sent our son to jail, this house will also be a prison for you, and there will be no escape." She claims she was beaten while pregnant, leading to a miscarriage.

A few days later, her husband and in-laws allegedly demanded another ₹10 lakh from her father for her sister-in-law's wedding and also insisted that her father's shop be transferred to her husband's name.

In August 2024, her in-laws reportedly threw her out of the house. She then moved to Koparkhairane, Navi Mumbai, and began living in a rented room with her husband. However, on June 23, 2025, her husband allegedly told her that he had never wanted to marry her and had only done so on his lawyer's advice, stating his "work was done." He then allegedly threw her out of the house.

Finally, the victim filed a fresh complaint at Trombay Police Station. Police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Act against the family, and further investigations are underway.
