Mumbai: Acting swiftly, the Mumbai Crime Branch arrested a 31-year-old man within 24 hours of receiving a complaint of molestation aboard a moving BEST bus. The incident, which occurred on April 10, was reported to the Worli Police Station on April 16 as per Complaint of the 26-year-old victim. The accused identified as Irfan Hussain Shaikh.
According to police officials, the woman was commuting on BEST bus route 167 from Prabhadevi to Kurne Chowk when the accused, standing behind her, allegedly touched her inappropriately, including her private parts. Though initially hesitant to report the incident, the woman later filed a formal complaint.
Upon receiving the complaint, we promptly registered an FIR and initiated an investigation, said DCP Zone 3 Dattatray Kamble. The case was registered under Section 74 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Simultaneously, Unit 3 of the Mumbai Crime Branch began a parallel probe.
The team analyzed CCTV footage from multiple locations, including the boarding and alighting points of the accused. Critical evidence was retrieved from cameras inside the bus, confirming the suspect’s actions.
Following extensive CCTV tracking across 25 locations, the accused was traced to a company named Great Ship in Worli. He was apprehended and brought in for questioning, during which he admitted to the crime.
The accused, identified as Irfan Hussain Shaikh, a resident of Kherwadi, Bandra, underwent a medical examination before being handed over to Worli Police for further legal proceedings.
