Mumbai: A deceased police officer’s wife was allegedly defrauded of Rs50 lakh under the false promise of receiving a flat through the Mantralaya housing quota. The Charkop police have registered a case against the accused, Kiran Mahadik, a resident of Borivali.

According to the FIR, 58year-old Aparna Patil resides in Kandivali West with her daughter and son-in-law. Aparna’s husband Arun Patil retired as a police sub-inspector in 2017 and succumbed to cancer in March last year. She was approached by Mahadik aka Banti during her husband’s medical treatment. He subsequently became well acquainted with the family.

Claiming connections within the Mantralaya and proximity to MHADA officials, Mahadik assured Aparna that he could secure a flat for her at a 10% discount in a MHADA building located in Chikuwadi, Borivali West. He told her he knew one politically influential person, Mandar Borkar, and was also close to a politician and MHADA vice-president. He cited a price of Rs72 lakh for the flat. When Aparna expressed her inability to pay the full amount, he sought an initial payment of Rs20 lakh and advised her to take a loan.

Over time, Mahadik coerced her into paying additional amounts under various pretexts, eventually collecting around Rs50 lakh in cash. The complainant stated that she withdrew most of the money in cash from ATMs and even sold her jewellery to raise funds. Despite repeated assurances, she neither received a flat nor got her money back.
