Mumbai: A new underpass connecting Dadar and Prabhadevi to the Mumbai Coastal Road is set to open to the public soon. This 550-meter-long, 11-meter-wide tunnel is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion and improve connectivity between Mumbai’s western suburbs and central and southern parts of the city. Once open, the tunnel will also serve as a direct link from the Sewri-Worli Connector to the Coastal Road, enhancing access for southbound commuters.
The tunnel, being constructed under Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Road using the Austrian Tunneling Method, begins at JK Kapur Chowk in Worli and exits near Bindu Madhav Thackeray Chowk. It is set to be thrown open for motorists by the end of May, according to a report by News18. The tunnel runs parallel to the Worli Seaface and is specifically designed for one-way, southbound vehicular movement. Once operational, the underpass will provide a faster alternative route for commuters traveling from Dadar, Prabhadevi, and Worli towards Bandra, Marine Drive, and Nariman Point.
Underpass To Provide Access To Bandra-Worli Sea Link
Importantly, the underpass will integrate with the twin arms of the Worli Interchange, one connecting to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL) and the other to the Marine Drive stretch via the Mumbai Coastal Road Project (MCRP). This infrastructure is poised to play a key role in streamlining north-south traffic movement in the city.
The tunnel forms part of the larger 10.58-km Mumbai Coastal Road Project, which stretches from the Princess Street Flyover at Marine Drive to the BWSL. Valued at approximately Rs. 13,000 crore, the project also includes a 7.5-km sea-facing promenade modelled after Marine Drive. This public space will feature jogging tracks, seating areas and landscaped green zones, running from Priyadarshini Park to Worli.
In a unique collaboration, Tata Sons Limited is contributing to the beautification of a 4.35-km stretch of the median along this route under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative. This enhancement project between Priyadarshini Park and Worli aims to add aesthetic value to the high-traffic corridor.
