Mumbai: The newly inaugurated Mumbai Coastal Road has now gone smart, with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) completing the installation of a cutting-edge CCTV surveillance system along the entire stretch.

A total of 236 CCTV cameras are now active across the 10.58-kilometre route from Shamaldas Gandhi Marg (Princess Street flyover) to the Worli end of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, aimed at boosting road safety, improving traffic flow, and curbing violations.

To ensure robust monitoring, the BMC has installed four types of high-tech cameras, each serving a unique function:

Video Incident Detection System (VIDS): 154 cameras have been installed inside the twin tunnels at 50-metre intervals. These smart cameras detect accidents, wrong-way driving, stalled vehicles, and raise instant alerts to the control room.

PTZ (Pan-Tilt-Zoom) Cameras: 71 PTZ cameras provide 360-degree dynamic coverage, automatically tracking incidents flagged by the VIDS system.

Automatic Traffic Counting Cameras (ATCC): These are placed at tunnel entry and exit points to record the number and types of vehicles, aiding in traffic data analysis.

Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) Cameras: Seven ANPR cameras capture number plates of vehicles exceeding the speed limit, enabling authorities to take action against violators.

The BMC stated that the system aims to address common issues like overspeeding, street racing, and high noise levels along the scenic coastal stretch. Real-time footage and data from these cameras are now being shared with the Mumbai Traffic Police for swift enforcement and smoother traffic regulation.

The move comes amid growing traffic volume on the coastal road and is seen as a crucial step toward making Mumbai’s newest arterial road safer and smarter.
