Mumbai: The Jeejamata Udyan and Zoo has witnessed rise in footfall ever since penguins came to zoo and the revenue generated through the sale of tickets on the Republic Day weekend was over Rs 10 lakh. The revenues generated by on January 26 was over Rs 5.50 lakh, while the revenues generated on the January 27 was Rs 5 lakh. “The credit for this goes to the constant improvements and installations happening in the zoo.
We have installed a new theatre for social awareness which would be a major attraction, besides 7 penguins and new animals which are expected to come shortly,” said Dr Sanjay Tripathi, director of the zoo. The penguins were brought to the zoo in 2007. Besides, black buck, lions, tiger, jackals, wolves, hyenas and swamp dears are expected to join the zoo in next three to six months.
The zoo attracts 15,000 individuals on weekdays and over 30,000 on weekends. The entry fee is for the zoo is Rs 50 per head and Rs 100 for a family of four. Besides for a camera and video camera, Rs 100 and Rs 200 are charged respectively. For watching penguins, the visitor has to pay Rs 100 extra. The total revenue collected by the zoo since April 2018 till date is almost Rs 7 crore, claimed Tripathi. “Before bringing penguins and upgradation of facilities, the annual collection use to be Rs 60 lakh”, Tripathi said.
