Mumbai: BMC Orders Contractors To Make All Roads In City Motorable Before Monsoon, Sets May 31 As Deadline

BMC Chief Bhushan Gagrani said that all civic officials and contractors are directed to ensure the roads where works are going on, are motorable before monsoon. The BMC has set the deadline of May 31 to complete the existing road works.

The BMC on Tuesday presented a budget estimate for fiscal year 2025-26 of over Rs 74 thousand crore, its biggest budget to date. The budget was presented by Municipal Commissioner and administration Bhushan Gagrani, his first budget after being appointed as the commissioner of the BMC.

In his budget speech, the BMC chief said, "Mumbai civic body has this year presented it's biggest budget and it reflects the demands and expectations of Mumbaikars. We will ensure we stand to our citizens expectations."

Mumbaikars have been complaining about extensive road works undertaken across the city which has been causing inconvenience and traffic snarls. Taking note of the complaints, Gagrani said although the civic body aims to concentratise all roads in the city, the contractors are directed to not dig any new roads until the existing works are done. However, the road works which can be completed before monsoon can be undertaken. 

Gagrani said that all civic officials and contractors are directed to ensure the roads where works are going on, are motorable before monsoon. The BMC has set the deadline of May 31 to complete the existing road works.

Talking about the project of road concretisation, the commissioner said although BMC aims to concretise all roads in Mumbai, there has been objections by residents to not concretise the existing roads which are on good condition. If such proposals are submitted on residents demand to not concentratise the road in a specific locality, the proposal will be considered.

Gagrani also said BMC is working with other agencies like MSRDC, MMRDA etc to ensure the traffic issue on the Western and Eastern Express Highway, and traffic problems on other major roads too are addressed and the roads in the city are potholes free. 

The BMC had invited citizens suggestions and expectations for the city's budget for FY 25-26, and the civic body recieved 2238 suggestions from the citizens, which have been taken note of and tried to inculcate in the budget.
