Mumbai: The work of commissioning the new 2400 mm Tansa water pipeline between Powai Anchor Block and the Maroshi Water Tunnel (Tunnel Shaft) was successfully completed on Thursday. A dedicated team of 44 engineers and 200 workers worked non-stop for 30 hours to lay the pipeline and carry out necessary repairs.

This crucial initiative will ensure that the water supply operates at optimal pressure and remains free from leaks. Once activated, the new pipeline will streamline water supply to several key areas, including S Ward (Bhandup), L Ward (Kurla), K East Ward (Jogeshwari, Andheri East), H East Ward (Santacruz, Khar, Bandra East), and G North Ward (Dharavi, Mahim).

The work involved disconnecting the two existing 1800 mm Tansa East and West pipelines and commissioning the new one. As a result, water supply to parts of these five civic wards was shut down for 30 hours.

During this time, the BMC's Hydraulic Engineering Department carried out various repair works, including major repairs at Powai Lake, Bhandup, Maroshi, Morarji Nagar, Bandra, Vijaynagar Bridge, Sahar Village, Sahar Cargo, and Dharavi.

The repair work involved several important tasks, such as sealing leaks in Powai High-Level Reservoir No. 1's pipeline, repairing cracks to prevent further leaks, isolating and cleaning the two compartments of Bhandup Hill Reservoir No. 1, cutting through the main pipeline, installing protective domes, and relocating tap connections. According to a civic official, these repairs will strengthen the water supply in the affected zones.
