BEST Bus Stuck After Road Caves In Near Girgaon Metro Station
Meanwhile, another BEST bus was caught in a mishap on Monday morning after a sudden road cave-in near Thakurdwar signal, close to an ongoing Metro Line 3 construction site of Girgaon Metro Station. The incident occurred around 9:30 am, briefly disrupting peak-hour traffic but fortunately resulting in no injuries.
According to officials, the incident took place when the rear left tyre of the bus, operating on Route No. 121 from Backbay Depot to J. Mehta Marg, sank into a cavity formed due to a sudden ground collapse near Thakurdwar Junction. The road cave-in is suspected to have been caused by water ingress from a nearby construction site for a rehabilitation building, part of the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) Metro 3 project.
BEST authorities immediately responded by dispatching a towing van and crane to the site. By 10:45 am, the stranded bus was successfully removed and towed to the Backbay Depot for a thorough inspection. A preliminary assessment confirmed that the bus had sustained only a minor dent and was otherwise fit for service.
“The bus was in good condition and, despite the road collapse, was able to operate after being moved,” a BEST spokesperson confirmed. The incident caused temporary traffic diversions, particularly affecting Route No. 121. In the 'Up' direction, vehicles were rerouted from Kalaniketan through alternate roads to avoid the Thakurdwar Junction. In the 'Down' direction, buses were diverted via Charushila Gupta Chowk along M.K. Road.
