Mumbai: The Mumbai Airport Customs officials on Tuesday arrested a 29-year-old old Malad resident for allegedly smuggling Hydroponic Weed valued at Rs 61 lakh.
According to the Customs sources, they intercepted one passenger Mohammed Arif Momin, on the basis of profiling that he might be carrying some contraband items, after he arrived at CSMI Airport, Mumbai on Tuesday from Bangkok.
In his trolley bag Customs officers found two packets containing greenish coloured dry leafy substance. On testing the said substance it tested positive for hydroponic weed weighing 610 grams valued at Rs 61 lakh.
Momin in his statement admitted that he was aware that smuggling of Hydroponic weed (Cannabis) and other illegal drugs into India attracts stringent punishment as per laws prevalent in India.
"The preliminary investigation carried out so far disclose involvement of other persons who are yet to be traced. The investigations in the case are at a very preliminary stage and efforts are also being made to identify and apprehend key associates of the accused," said a Customs official.
Advocates Arun Gupta and Birendra Yadav argued for the accused in the court after which he was granted bail.
