Mumbai: While the air quality index in Colaba-Navy Nagar has improved, the situation in Govandi-Shivaji Nagar remains concerning, with pollution levels still high.

The BMC's M East ward has issued notices to 63 construction sites, Ready Mix Concrete (RMC) plants, and factories, directing them to implement necessary measures to curb air pollution within the next seven days. Additionally, a bakery was shut down after it was found to be non-compliant with the established environmental norms.

After a one-week shutdown, the BMC lifted the blanket ban on construction activities in Borivali (East) and Byculla last Monday. While the air quality improved in Colaba, the situation in Govandi Shivaji Nagar worsened.

On Thursday, the AQI in Shivaji Nagar reached 215, indicating very poor air quality. Civic officials stated that RMC plants and bakeries are major contributors to the pollution in the area.

"After an inspection, notices were issued to 63 construction sites, RMC plants, and factories, giving them a week to take necessary measures to prevent air pollution. The RMC plants were instructed to follow the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board's (MPCB) guidelines to avoid contributing to pollution. Additionally, roads in the area were washed to settle dust particles," as per the M East ward official.

Since November 2024, the BMC's special squad has inspected 877 construction sites in Mumbai, issuing stop-work notices to 286 for failing to follow dust mitigation guidelines.

An official stated, "Non-compliant sites will receive a notice, and repeated violations may lead to further action, including a stop-work order or an FIR under the MRTP Act."
